DETENTION MINISTRY

Goal I: Fulfilling the Church's Mission

• Proclaim the Word of God to inmates, fostering personal transformation through accepting God's unconditional love and mercy.
• Establish faith communities within each detention facility in the Archdiocese of Miami.
• Tailor pastoral plans to meet the specific needs of each facility, coordinated by facility pastoral teams.

Goal II: Embracing Catholic Social Teaching

• Support victims, inmates' families, and former offenders with their physical and financial challenges.
• Foster crime prevention initiatives within parish communities.
• Aid reintegration of ex-offenders into the community, ensuring a smooth transition and support network.

Goal III: Advocating for Restorative Justice

• Educate parishes on the realities of the criminal justice system.
• Engage in local social and educational committees to advocate for systemic change.
• Collaborate with County Public Defender's and State Attorney's Offices to promote justice and restoration.

The Detention Ministry Office serves with pastoral teams, including a Director who is a Permanent Deacon, supported by numerous priests and lay volunteers. This diverse team serves a multicultural inmate population across 30 correctional facilities within the Archdiocese of Miami, developing and implementing pastoral care plans to meet the spiritual and rehabilitative needs of those incarcerated.
